The end of Flash.
iContinuxDecember 31st 2020
Hey penguins,
This year has been difficult for most of us due to the global pandemic. We have all experienced various challenges unlike any other for the first time, and for many of us it has resulted in sudden changes in our day-to-day life.
Moving on, with this year ending and a new chapter starting, unfortunately with a heavy heart we also must say goodbye to Adobe Flash. According to Adobe, Flash will officially be terminated at the beginning of 2021. On January 12th, 2021, Adobe will begin blocking all Flash content. Most of you are aware that New Club Penguin is made completely through Flash, which means you will no longer be able to play NewCP like you normally used to. This is a big deal not only for New Club Penguin, but almost every Flash-based game out there. Sadly, we must bid goodbye to the Flash games that we once grew up playing.
However, there is no need to worry. In this post, we hope to announce some of our plans to all of you regarding the transition after the end of Flash and the future of New Club Penguin. As a team, a lot of thought and work went into deciding what would be the next best steps and striving to come to a solution. Since there are a few options on the table, we have decided to explore every potential solution and remain flexible for our players. Below, we will outline some of the options taking place into the future.

Solution 1: Downloadable Client

Major browsers will no longer be supporting Flash after 2020, but that does not mean it is impossible to continue using Flash. A downloadable client, which many of you have downloaded from our website, has Flash pre-installed and will allow you to continue playing NewCP. Our downloadable client supports Windows, MacOS, and will soon support ChromeOS. Once the client is downloaded once, it will automatically launch every time you visit our play page.

Solution 2: HTML5

HTML5 will replace Flash after 2020. By using our HTML5 client, you can continue playing NewCP in on your browser, even after Flash ends. Here at NewCP, we have been working very hard to create a high quality replication of the Flash client in HTML5, but this process is tedious and time-consuming. To create a full recreation, every asset must be converted to a format that HTML5 supports. Flash is very different from HTML5, so this process will take a while.
We hope to release the first version of our HTML5 client mid-January. Our HTML5 client will be fully cross-compatible with our Flash client, meaning that not only can you log-in to your original NewCP account, but you can also see other penguins no matter whether they are using the Flash client or the HTML5 client. It will also have full mobile support.
Despite the fact that we have released the downloadable client, it is possible that we may discontinue our downloadable client once the HTML5 client is fully developed.
More information about our HTML5 client will be posted in the beginning of 2021.

Solution 3: Modifying Chrome/other browsers

Although there is no known way of doing this yet, there is a possibility that there may be tools released that could allow you to continue using Flash in Google Chrome after 2020. It is for this reason that, despite Chrome not officially supporting Flash, we will keep our Flash client available on our website in case this becomes possible.
We will keep everyone updated on any changes or developments to these options, as well as releasing more information regarding HTML5 early on in 2021. Rest assured that our developers are working hard to make sure the NewCP experience remains the best it can be into the future. Thank you for sticking with us as we navigate this transition, and we can’t wait to keep waddling with you!
